As far as I know mono plugs have 1 input, stereo plugs have 2 inputs, but there are more complex plugs like Voxengo Voxformer that has 8 inputs etc. A stereo signal is 2 outputs so a mono plug with its 1 input cannot handle it well. It is physics I think, and my experiments supported this, though there my be other definition for mono and stereo plugs that work wherever put.
