Do you use auto gain features or manual compensation

I would like to know if I should be using auto gain settings on my plugins to lets say eq a vocal. I was told when adjusting a plugin it might fool my ears to think it’s better just because volume is louder but I’m not sure, auto gain seems to work especially when eq a vocal, I can hear what the settings are actually doing rather then being misled by volume changes
