[split] Dante and Audio Networking
#11
The Brooklyn II chipsets are supposed to be update-able to also support AES67, opening up the door to using Ravenna instead of Dante software. Their ANEMAN (audio network manager) software is free (Windows and Mac )S at present). The software is free.

https://aneman.net/

While Ravenna/AES67 aren't quite the same, they are getting closer. There is also a Ravenna Virtual Sound Card available. The free one will only handle 24 bit/41.1 -48K. Buying Merging Tech products with get the better one that will also handle higher sample rates.

There is also a free Windows VSC from:

https://www.ravenna-network.com/resources/

You need to create an account, but it should also allow routing between two Windows PCs.

There is a lot of info on the Ravenna website. I like it because it is mostly open source.

Thanks for posting. As of the last time I browsed Ravenna, for me there were two major issues for Ravenna and they are similar to the two major issues for Audinate Dante:

1 - At least one piece of Ravenna or Dante hardware is required
2 - No Linux driver

Both issues are being addressed - but very slowly.

As far as issue 1 is concerned (hardware being totally bypassed,) I thought that it was just a wish - until I was able to run a Dante session in software. It worked - at least for several minutes for one or two channels. It required VIA and it required the Dante Virtual Sound card (each on its own computer) and back then, ASIO wouldn't run on VIA. Ran out of chances to experiment enough. The problem with the Dante Virtual Sound card is the limited number of times that you are allowed to install it. Change the OS? That's a new install. Fortunately the folks at Audinate are helpful, but I wish that they had their VIA policy back when they designed DVS at the beginning. I'll have more about software later.

How many channels can you run on your Ravenna? I have heard good things about Merging and HORUS and HAPI.

best, john

A member here has contacted Merging and they said they would provide a linux driver with a hapi/horus.

I would love an interface with 8/16 inputs an ravenna/dante netwoking to my computer. a lot better than running a snake through the house, or wherever.
