Free mixing practice
#1
Mike Senior is the author of "Mixing Secrets" (which I find quite good IMHO) and also maintains a free resource for mixing practice featuring dozens of multitrack examples, with new ones being constantly added. They range from single track acoustic guitar and voice to 72 tracks projects covering a wide array of styles. All projects have an MP3 preview, and many have discussion forums. You can submit your version of a mix and discuss it. There is also a section on suggested mixes for beginners.

It's great that Mike offers all this for free. He also authors "Recording Secrets".

I love cambridge with all my heart. also for a place to learn puremix.net and mixwiththemasters. I will become a member once my puremix expires. Last time I was watching part one of Michael brauer and just from that part, Oh man I was having knowledgegasim. I was so smitten and I didn't even notice for how long he was explaining his method and from that part one, I have learnt a lot. And Please if you can afford I will advice everybody to check http://mixwiththemasters.com/ website.

In keeping with the free aspect, I should add Michael White (Whitney Houston, David Byrne, James Taylor, etc...) With about 30 gold records, he knows what he's talking about but moreover, and this is crucial, he conveys the passion for mixing. He is not talking from a 'high chair' but rather sprinkles a fair amount of '... if that makes sense'. On the technical side, he puts forth, amongst other things, the 3D sound field and the need for subtle various compressions to compensate for track-based studio recording (as opposed to a live band playing together) technical performance, and the 3-tier mixing structure allowing for 3 levels of processing. He shares a good amount of free information (Fundamentals of Mixing, Youtube videos), and he also has paid courses on recording, mixing, mastering, production and career building.

He also has free on-line courses on Wednesdays. Approx 2 hours, 2 1/2 hours each. 4pm pacific time, 7pm eastern. Have to register first.

His courses are not made for high-impact commercial delivery and, I think, could not fare well with the TLDR; crowd. They are really like going to a school and as such, the student must invest also of his/her own.

While not free, Really Quite Reasonabl there is also Warren Huart's Produce Like A Pro Academy (producelikeapro.com). Monthly full multitracks and mix reviews. All of which can be used for your personal portfolio.

Just a few of his credits:
Augustana
Aerosmith
The Fray
Kris Allen
James Blunt
The X Factor (U.S. TV series)
Daniel Powter

I have been a member of the academy from day one and its been a HUGE impacty on my mixing and the like.
