I think it's fixed now after simply deleting ~/.config/mixbus6/ folder and allowing MB to create a fresh one. How it originally got to defaulting to saving imports as .rf64 I have no idea and will probably never know. MB32C v5 has the same behaviour so it happened at least a few months ago.
